This project explores ideas of enhanced livability in the context of increasing lifestyle demands. The challenge was to strike a balance between efficient use of the site, functionality, affordability, and integration with the street. Grounded by a user-centered approach to layout, materiality, form, and function, the design focuses on longevity and livability.
We believe that smaller spaces, designed and built with consideration, can provide everything required to live well, with less, more simply.
We believe in the power of incidental interaction to break down boundaries and strengthen community. Multiple layers were used to mediate the transition between public and private space. An open posted recycled timber fence prevents all but perpendicular external sight lines. Native tree plantings behind the fence create a layer of permeable screening to the setback front yard with passive seating. This use of layering enables connection between inhabitants and passers-by.
Affordability is not just a consideration during construction. Maintenance over the life of the building was considered to decrease costs over time. Highly textured materials, such as timbers, require more regular maintenance and are located at ground level where they are accessible, with robust low-maintenance materials, such as Colorbond, used in areas out of reach. This focus maximizes texture and warmth at everyday touchpoints at the human scale.
Detail resolution is an important component of the design. Details that are robust, beautiful, and easy to maintain were considered carefully. Designing for tolerance and ease of assembly with simple yet elegant resolution of natural, personable, and recycled materials where possible were key focuses of the design.
The design team adhered to ambitious sustainability principles:
1) Passive Comfort: Prioritized natural temperature control methods for comfort without excessive energy use.
2) Long-term Affordability: Focused on low lifetime running costs to ensure economic sustainability.
3) Resource Efficiency: Minimized resource consumption during construction and operation.
4) Environmental Responsibility: Reduced environmental impact throughout the building's lifecycle.
5) Sustainable Mobility: Promoted eco-friendly transportation options for convenient travel.
6) Community Engagement: Fostered a community culture supporting sustainable living practices.
A focus on connection allows for natural light, ventilation, and energy transfer, creating comfortable places to seek refuge, build relationships, and nurture growth. This approach enhances both physical and social environments within the residence.
Detail resolution is crucial, with a focus on creating robust, beautiful, and easy-to-maintain elements. The design prioritizes tolerance, ease of assembly, and the use of natural, personable, and recycled materials, ensuring simplicity and elegance throughout the residence.
